Teaching Math Labs for Algebra Using Interactive Computing and Programming

Algebra is one of the most difficult topics for K-12 students to learn. It is considered as the gatekeeper for students to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Working with K-12 educators, the C-STEM Center has developed a new strategy to teach Algebra. This course trains teachers teaching Algebra more effectively using the new strategy. Through a sequence of well-designed simple, concise, and self-contained math lab sessions, students will learn basic concepts of math and their practical applications. At the same time, students will learn the fundamentals of computing, underlying working principles of computers, and computer programming for problem solving. Through a set of computing and programming modules and applied problem solving activities in a C/C++ interpreter Ch, students will gain the better understanding of math concepts and their applications. The C-STEM Center will work with teachers to implement the program in their curriculum during the academic year.
Outcome for Trainees’ K-12 Students
- Gain a better understanding of math concepts and their applications
- Be able to better master abstract concepts of Algebra
- Learn the fundamentals of computing, underlying working principles of computers, and computer programming for problem solving
- Be able to participate in the UC Davis Robotics Competition
